Records show that the town of Hull developed in the middle ages where the River Hull joins the Humber. Hull became well known and developed through its use as the main port for exporting wool from there and the surrounding areas over to Northern Europe and for the importation of raw materials, such as timber into England.

The oldest known documentation, which relates to any part of Hull and gives insight into some of its history, is a grant without a date which is made to the Abbey of Meaux and is believed to have probably originated in the year 1160 by Matilda Camin

1279 -  Hull was granted the right to hold a market and a fair.
1285 – The Church of the Holy Trinity was built. The Church of St Marys was   later built in the 14th Century
1293-  King Edward I acquired Hull. It was renamed Kingston (kings town) on  Hull.
 King Edward I bought the port of Hull as a base for his military campaigns  in Scotland
 Carmelite Friars (known as white friars because of the colour of their  habits) arrived. They live on in the street name Whitefriargate.
1299 –The town received its first charter ( which is still in the possession    of the corporation) on the 1st April through the influence of Richard               Oysel who was the first person that was appointed as warden of                the town
  King Edward founded the borough of Kingston – Upon – Hull on    the site of the port and this is stil the formal title of the city
1302 – A gallows was erected in the town
1305 – Two Burgesses  were returned to Parliament
1331 -  Hull was given a charter (a document granting the townspeople certain    privileges). This gave Hull its independence. From that date Hull had a     mayor. The first was Richard De La Pole, a rich merchant. By the 14th     century there was a grammar school in Hull.
1349 – Like many other towns around it Hull suffered from the Black Death this     year
1401 – The people of Hull complained to the King about the troubles they had in     obtaining fresh water
1413 – 18th March, King Henry V wrote to the burgesses and mayor of Hull    demanding a supply of men and ships to assist him in his planned       invasion of France
1452 - Members of Parliament for Hull were each paid 2s. per day for their    services whilst attending their parliamentary duties
1536 – The Pilgrimage of Grace
1539 -  Henry VIII closed the monasteries
1541 -  Henry ordered that there should be improvements to the towns defences.   On the other side of the river Hull, opposite the town Henry built       blockhouses or small forts
  A bridge was built near the North Gate.
1537, 1575-76, 1602-4 and 1637 – There were outbreaks of the plague
1619 - The merchants of Hull erected an Exchange in High Street
1636 – Charles presented the corporation with a sword of state which to date is     still in their possession
16th – 17th Century – During this period Hull suffered a decline in trade but its       strategic importance meant that it received a great deal of       the military’s attention on both sides of the British Civil       Wars
1642 – The country was moving towards civil war and King Charles I attempted     to take control of the arsenal at Hull, but was turned away from the gates     by the governor Sir John Hotham. Hull supported the Parliamentarian     (Roundhead) side in the conflict, and was consequently besieged by the     Royalists (Cavaliers) for five weeks in September and October 1643.
1735 -  A statue of King William 1688-1704 was erected
1743 – Hulls first theatre opened in Lowgate
1755 -  An Act of Parliament set up a body of men with responsibility for paving,     cleaning and lighting the streets of Hull
1778 - The last execution of a criminal took place in Hull, when John Rogerson     was hanged for coining,
1782 – Hull Royal Infirmary opened
1801 – At the time of the first census Hull had a population of approximately     22,000
1814 – A dispensary for poor people was opened where the could get free     medicine. Also this year a lunatic asylum was opened in the town
1822 – Hull had gas street lighting.
1836 – Hull had an established modern police force
1840 – On the 1st July this year the first railway connection between Hull and     Selby was established
1860 - The first public park, Beverley Park, was opened
1873 -Hull was honoured by a visit from his Imperial Highness, the Czarowitz  (now emperor) of Russia
 Victoria Hospital for sick children opened
1880 – The first telephone exchange opened
1881 – An outbreak of smallpox claimed the lives of 689 people
1885 – An infectious disease hospital opened on Hedon Road
1887 -  The municipal hospital was opened
  There was a volunteer fire brigade – this became a professional one in    1938
1893 – An electricity generating station was opened but it would be decades     before the gas streetlight would be replaced by electric.
1897 – Hull was granted City status
1902 -  Kingston Communications was formed making Hull the only city in the UK   with its own independent telephone network company. It can be        recognised across the city by the distinctice cream telephone boxes

1909 - City Hall was built

1915 – Hull was raided during World War I – a total of 24 people were killed

1916 – Guildhall was built

1927 – Ferens Art Gallery opened

 The University of Hull was founded and received its Royal Charter in 1954

 During World War 2 about 5000 houses were destroyed as well as 14  schools and 27 churches

1952 - The Hull Philharmonic Youth Orchestra was established

1975 – Prospect Shopping Centre was opened.

1976 – The Streetlife Museum opened

1989 – The Transport Museum opened

1990 – The Princes Quay Shopping Centre was opened

1991 – Hull’s Historic docks opened
2001 -  An aquarium, The Deep, opened
Today the population of Hull is 243,000
